Our Leadership Initiatives staff was up bright and early preparing for the day ahead and getting ready to welcome all of the wonderful new interns to Georgetown’s campus. Everyone quickly got to work making the finishing touches on all of the New South dorm floors, ensuring that each students’ room was up to standard. At last, the first of the interns arrived, checked in, and began settling into their floors and getting to know one another.
As soon as the interns dropped their things off, the fun began. Exploration tours were off to several local Georgetown locations, such as Starbucks, the Georgetown Bookstore, and the Georgetown Campus itself. Many of the interns and their parents hopped on the opportunity to go get a sweet treat, explore the campus, or buy some Georgetown merch to commemorate their visit. As the day went on, more interns began showing up to check in and meet their roommates. The interns filled up the lounges on the floors as they talked to others from around the world and created lasting friendships with people in the program.
Everyone changed into their blue program shirts and headed towards the auditorium to hear from Marshall Bailly who discussed the expectations of the interns and the work that they would be doing to transform lives in the real world. After this brief presentation, the interns split up into their program groups and our law interns were able to hear from Rebbeca Bloch, Public Defender for the District of Columbia, and Gene Downing, a formerly incarcerated man who now works as a Poet Ambassador & Outreach and Community Building Chair at Freeminds Book Club. The interns were very excited to meet the lawyer that they would be working with throughout the week and enjoyed a special treat from Mr. Downing, a passionate spoken word poem describing his friend’s experience in jail.
It was dinner time after this and the interns enjoyed cheese and pepperoni pizza, accompanied by a variety of snacks, sodas, and waters. After this, everyone headed to the buses to drive towards the famous monuments of the US Capitol. The interns had the opportunity to view the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the World War II Memorial. Interns enjoyed getting to know their peers, watching the ducks in the reflecting pool, and enjoying our nation’s capitol.
After viewing the monuments of D.C., the interns headed back to the dorms to take some time to relax and visit with their new friends. Then, the interns showered and did their nightly routines, getting ready for bed and getting sleep for the day ahead.
