Every day at the Advanced Medical and Neuroscience Internship brings new topics to the forefront of neuroscience. Recently, through a captivating lecture by Dr. Adam Green and interactive experiences with neurostimulation technology, interns were able to unlock the hidden potential of the mind: creativity.
In the lecture, Dr. Adam Green explained how the brain’s different regions collaborate to generate creative thoughts and ideas. He highlighted the roles of the prefrontal cortex, the default mode network, and the salience network. He also discussed the workings of his lab, where they are currently exploring how stimulating various areas of the brain can increase creativity.
Interns were enchanted by the subject and were able to further expand their knowledge by using different neurostimulating technologies, such as EEGs, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and other headsets with probes to stimulate the brain. Dr. Green’s associates came in to discuss the use of the different technologies. Interns were able to put on the technology to gain the experience without actually stimulating the brain.
Interns gained a lot of valuable information and learned fun facts about creativity, creative anxiety, and how they can become more creative. [intern], said, “I never knew that women experience more creative anxiety than men. Dr. Green said his lab has working theories about why that is, but I think it would be a really interesting topic for me to explore in the future.”
In addition to the lectures, interns had hands-on experiences with the neurostimulating technology. Aditi Bindra described the feeling of neurotechnology when she expressed, “The technology felt a lot weirder than I thought it would. The probes on some of the technology, such as the EEG headset, were cold against my head, which I didn’t expect.”
Another intern, Beyoncé Castro, thought about the real life applications of the neurostimulating technology in relation to creativity. Beyoncé mentioned, “Using EEG technology and understanding how various areas of the brain can be stimulated and tracked was surreal. It made me realize how much potential there is to enhance creativity through neuroscience. It makes me wonder how many problems in the world can be solved in creative ways by enhancing the creativity of people.”
Through this journey, interns were able to go on an immersive experience that bridged the gap between neuroscience and everyday creativity. Interns left with a deeper understanding of their own minds and a sense of excitement about the future of neuroscientific research. As interns continue to explore neuroscience, they will take the knowledge they learned about their own minds with them when making the next largest neuroscience discovery.
