For 161 years, the National Museum of Health and Medicine (NMHM) has shared the history of medicine and American military medicine. It collects specimens and artifacts in order to research trauma and pathology and inform visitors about the advancement of military and civilian medicine. Through its 3 main exhibits, advances in military medicine, anatomy and pathology, and their teaching collection, the NMHM works to preserve and explore the impact of medicine.

The tour of the NMHM in the Advanced Medical & Neuroscience Internship is not only a guided visual tour, but also a hands-on interactive tour where interns can hold real human organs ranging from the brain to the stomach. One of the reasons why this field trip is so important for interns is that it helps them understand the past of medicine so they can connect it to the present and work towards a better future.

Some of the highlights of the NMHM for most interns were the Abraham Lincoln showcase, displaying the bullet which killed him, along with fragments of the president's skull!
