Surgical Insights: Interns Engage in a Session with Pediatric Urology Surgeon Dr. Rachel Selekman

In the ever-evolving world of medical education, few experiences are as enlightening as engaging directly with seasoned professionals. Recently, the interns of the Advanced Medical & Public Health Internship had the privilege of participating in a discussion-based session with Dr. Rachel Selekman, a renowned pediatric urology surgeon from Children’s National Hospital. This session offered the interns a unique window into the intricate world of pediatric surgery, fostering both knowledge and inspiration.

The session commenced with Dr. Selekman sharing her journey into pediatric urology, detailing her educational background, residency, and the motivations that led her to specialize in this field. Her passion for helping children and improving their quality of life resonated deeply with the interns. Intern Neha Praveen said, “I really enjoyed this presentation because I want to go into Pediatrics and listening to a Pediatric Surgeon really inspired me. She talked about her personal life balance as well which was super interesting.”

Dr. Selekman then delved into the specifics of pediatric urology, discussing common conditions she encounters, such as vesicoureteral reflux, hypospadias, and obstructive uropathy. She explained the surgical procedures involved in treating these conditions, emphasizing the importance of precision, patience, and compassion. The interns were captivated by her detailed explanations and the complexity of the surgeries she performs.

The interactive nature of the session allowed interns to ask Dr. Selekman a variety of questions. They inquired about the challenges she faces in her practice, the technological advancements in pediatric surgery, and the emotional aspects of working with young patients and their families. Intern River Van said, “This was my favorite part of the day because this was more centered around my interests. I enjoyed finding that people skills were just as important as finding a passion.”

Dr. Selekman also discussed the significance of multidisciplinary collaboration in pediatric surgery. She emphasized how working closely with anesthesiologists, radiologists, nurses, and other specialists is crucial for successful surgical outcomes. This highlighted the importance of teamwork and communication in the medical field, reinforcing the collaborative spirit among the interns.

A highlight of the session was when Dr. Selekman humorously compared real-life surgery to the dramatized versions often seen on TV shows like “Grey's Anatomy”. This light-hearted comparison helped to demystify the surgical process and made the session even more engaging for the interns.

By the end of the session, the interns were not only more knowledgeable about pediatric urology but also more inspired and motivated to pursue their medical careers. The discussion with Dr. Selekman underscored the blend of science, skill, and empathy required in surgery, leaving a lasting impression on the future healthcare professionals.

In conclusion, the discussion-based session with Dr. Rachel Selekman was a transformative experience for the interns of the Advanced Medical & Public Health Internship. It provided them with a deeper understanding of pediatric urology, practical insights into surgical procedures, and a renewed passion for their medical journey. With newfound knowledge and inspiration, these interns are now better equipped to navigate the challenges and rewards of a career in medicine.
