Spying on Spies... In the classroom

After arriving back from Maryland, we went right into our first guest speaker of the day: Maura Harty. Mrs. Harty is a highly accomplished individual – the former Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, the Executive Secretary of the Department of State under Secretary Colin Powell, the former Ambassador of the United States to Paraguay, and more! She served an impressive career of 27 years as a Foreign Service Officer after earning a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown’s very own Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service.

Interns learned how to break into the State Department and how important national security is while representing the interests of the United States abroad. They asked dozens of questions and were excited to learn more about the State Department. We may have some future diplomats in the crowd!

Our next distinguished guest speaker was Lynne Clark. She has served in the Department of Defense Air Force since August 1978 and was the first Air Force OPSEC Officer; she currently works with colleges and universities to develop and improve cybersecurity curricula.

Lynne spoke to the interns about operational security, discussing risk analysis, countermeasures, and other critical information to their security proposals. As always, the interns enjoyed engaging with Mrs. Clark and asked plenty of questions before splitting off into groups again to meet with their mentors to end off the night.
