In the dynamic and ever-evolving field of medicine, the journey to becoming a proficient healthcare professional is marked by countless moments of learning and discovery. From the foundational principles to the latest advancements, the pursuit of medical knowledge is both challenging and exhilarating. However, the most impactful lessons often come from stepping beyond the confines of textbooks and immersing oneself in real-life practice.
Recently, during our Skills Day on Wednesday, the Advanced Medical and Public Health interns had the exceptional opportunity to participate in an intensive CPR training session led by the esteemed Missy. This essential training provided them with an in-depth understanding of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), igniting their enthusiasm for their future careers.
CPR is a critical life-saving technique used in emergencies such as cardiac arrest. It is a foundational skill for all healthcare professionals. The session was meticulously designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring that the interns were well-prepared to act swiftly and effectively in real-life emergencies.
Missy commenced the session with a comprehensive overview of CPR, emphasizing the importance of timely and accurate chest compressions and rescue breaths. She demonstrated the correct hand placement, depth, and rhythm for effective compressions, as well as how to deliver breaths using a mask. The interns then practiced these techniques on manikins, gradually building their confidence and proficiency. Intern Emily Sparks said, “It was fun learning how to do CPR on babies and young kids.”
Throughout the training, the interns learned to recognize the signs of cardiac arrest, understood the critical importance of maintaining circulation until professional help arrives, and applied CPR techniques in various scenarios. This hands-on practice allowed them to internalize the procedures and hone their skills, deepening their understanding of CPR's life-saving potential.
The CPR training session not only provided a crucial lesson in emergency response but also cultivated essential skills such as teamwork, precision, and problem-solving. Collaborating with their peers, the interns learned to appreciate the significance of effective communication and coordination—key elements in any medical setting. Furthermore, this hands-on experience sparked their curiosity and motivated them to seek knowledge beyond the classroom. Their eagerness to learn will drive them to explore medical literature, attend seminars, and engage in stimulating discussions in the future.
Missy and the CPR training session made a lasting impact on the Advanced Medical and Public Health interns. Immersed in this invaluable hands-on experience, they transcended the confines of the classroom and connected with the essence of medicine and public health.
As they advance in their medical careers, they carry with them the knowledge, skills, and sense of responsibility acquired during this enlightening session. With a passion for healing and a commitment to improving lives, these aspiring medical professionals are now better equipped to make a significant impact in the healthcare field.
