Plastering Perfection: Interns Embrace the Craft of Cast Application

In the dynamic world of medical training, hands-on experience is essential for aspiring healthcare professionals. Recently, the Advanced Medical & Public Health Internship provided interns with an invaluable opportunity to master the intricate skill of plastering arms. This immersive workshop, led by seasoned experts, was a transformative experience that will undoubtedly shape their future medical careers.

The plastering workshop began with an informative session, where interns were introduced to the essential principles of applying plaster casts. Key topics included the anatomy of a cast, the importance of maintaining proper limb alignment, and the techniques for ensuring a secure and comfortable fit. This foundational knowledge set the stage for the practical training that followed.

With anticipation building, the interns transitioned to the hands-on portion of the workshop. In a controlled, simulated clinical environment, they carefully practiced plastering techniques on each other. Each step, from preparing the plaster strips to molding and smoothing the cast, was meticulously executed. Intern Laura Castellanos said, “It was a hands-on experience that made things fun and it was fun to be able to do a hands-on experience that separates from being in the classes constantly writing notes.”

The workshop had a profound impact, not only on the interns' technical abilities but also on their confidence and enthusiasm for their medical journeys. Learning to apply plaster casts effectively reinforced their commitment to excellence in patient care. Intern Faith Kamau said, “I have never broken a bone before so this was a new experience for me. I’m not going to lie, I used to be jealous of kids that broke their bones and had casts on because people in class would always go up to them and sign it. Even though it’s just a silly feeling, I felt like my inner child got her wish in a safe way.”

Additionally, the plastering workshop served as a critical milestone in the interns' professional development. Equipped with new skills, they are better prepared to handle real-world medical scenarios and make meaningful contributions to patient treatment. The experience also fostered a sense of teamwork and mutual support among the interns, as they learned and perfected their techniques together.

In summary, the Advanced Medical & Public Health Internship's plastering workshop was a pivotal experience for these budding medical professionals. With newfound practical skills and bolstered confidence, they are well on their way to making significant contributions to the ever-evolving field of medicine and public health.
