Mastering the Mic: Interns Learn Public Speaking with Gillie Haynes


Effective communication is essential for success, particularly in the medical and public health fields. Recently, the Advanced Medical & Public Health Internship interns had the invaluable opportunity to hone their public speaking skills under the guidance of Gillie Haynes, a distinguished communications expert, professor, author, and former journalist. Her engaging session provided the interns with vital tools to express their thoughts confidently and deliver compelling presentations.


Gillie Haynes, with her rich background in print and broadcast journalism, public relations, and academia, brought an extensive range of expertise to the workshop. As an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Communications at American University, she teaches Public Speaking and has also taught at The Catholic University of America. Her professional journey includes roles such as Public Relations Manager for a national program within the Department of Homeland Security and Business Development with EDS. She has also hosted on-air programs as Public Affairs Director at KBLX/KRE Radio in California’s Bay Area.



The session commenced with an overview of public speaking essentials. Gillie underscored the importance of preparation, audience understanding, and effective speech structuring. 


Gillie shared stories from her career, infusing the session with humor and personal insights. She recounted her experiences conducting public speaking workshops at the American Center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and how these experiences broadened her understanding of effective communication across cultures.


Gillie also introduced innovative public speaking techniques, focusing on body language, vocal variety, and the use of visual aids. She demonstrated how these elements can enhance a presentation and captivate the audience. 


A standout feature of the session was Gillie’s emphasis on finding one’s nerve and embracing the excitement of public speaking. She encouraged the interns to view public speaking not as a daunting task but as an opportunity to share their passion and knowledge.


The session concluded with the interns introducing themselves using the tips that Gillie provided. Gillie provided constructive feedback, highlighting their strengths and offering suggestions for improvement.



By the end of the workshop, the interns had gained newfound confidence in their public speaking abilities. Gillie’s dynamic teaching style, coupled with her extensive experience and personal insights, inspired the interns to embrace public speaking with enthusiasm and confidence.


In conclusion, the public speaking workshop with Gillie Haynes was a transformative experience for the interns of the Advanced Medical & Public Health Internship. It provided them with essential communication skills that will undoubtedly play a crucial role in their future careers.
