Hacking and Consulting: Cybersecurity Day 3

Today was filled with a multitude of lectures and activities from some of the world's best cybersecurity experts.

The day started with a presentation from Mr. Michael Collins, arguably the world’s leading expert on Security Operations Centers, author of one the best O’Reilly books on security, and a leader in both government and academia. Mr. Collins introduced the interns to topics including structure, security protocols, and penetration testing (pen testing).

Following this presentation, interns heard from Lisa Matthews, the executive director of KMPG who spoke about her experience working on government consulting contracts and how cybersecurity plays a key role in the evolution of continued client protection for accounting and big firms.

Interns were able to meet with Lynne Clarke, an NSA Cybersecurity specialist. Ms. Clarke introduced the topic of physical security and showcased to students how important security protocols are to maintaining web-based security.

Jamie later spoke with the interns on Employee Training and how to build a safe cyberspace in the workplace by using strong passwords. With a government clearance background, he explained how the government uses special tactics to ensure information stays secure and classified by limiting potential hacks. This concluded with a lecture by Prof. Jason Fabrikant, the Interim Director of American University’s School of Public Affairs, who taught the students useful tips for Public Speaking.

For the big part of the day, the interns were finally able to meet with their nonprofit organizations. Representatives from eight different nonprofits came to campus and spoke with the students about their business goals and cyber aspirations.
