Casting Party and Natural Discovery: A Day in Medicine

The students started the day by hearing a lecture from Advanced Medical and Public Health staff, who explained the different types of diseases commonly found in Nigeria and among the patients, interns in the Public Health internship work with. She broke down the different symptoms of each disease and explained how a medical professional can execute a patient questionnaire to uncover what might be wrong. The staff provided a live demonstration of how one conducts such an examination and gave interns the ability to test out their skills.

After this lecture, interns learned about what the purpose of a cast is and how to make one from their director Marc Zavarro. Marc demonstrated the process it takes to properly make a cast on someone before letting the interns all try for themselves. Every intern had the opportunity to cast a friend and get a custom-made one, perfect for their hand.

After lunch, the students headed to D.C. to visit the National Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of American History. Here, they explored in groups the different exhibits learning about the natural world and how time has evolved to have modern-day wonders. Students got to see creatures of the past and spent time taking photos of all that was available.

Once back at Georgetown, students got to visit a multitude of shops to get some post-dinner sweet treats.
