A Glimpse into National Security Careers

The interns participating in the National Security Internship found themselves immersed in a blend of technical, practical, and theoretical experiences, designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the field. The interns started their day at the HSI Technical Operations Centers. The visit commenced with a presentation detailing the multifaceted role of HSI in national security. The interns learned about HSI’s efforts in combating terrorism, drug trafficking, cybercrime, and human trafficking. The presentation was followed by a tour of the facility, where the interns observed the advanced technologies and methodologies employed by HSI to safeguard the nation. The hands-on exposure provided a real-world glimpse into the operational side of national security.

Following the HSI tour, the interns attended a panel discussion focused on careers in the military and government, specifically relating to national security. The panel featured distinguished professionals from the military and government. Each panelist shared their unique career paths, experiences, and the critical roles they play in national security. The discussion highlighted the diverse opportunities available within these sectors and emphasized the importance of dedication, resilience, and adaptability. Interns left the session with a broader perspective on potential career trajectories in national security.

Next on the agenda was a lecture by Gina Bennett, a seasoned intelligence officer renowned for her expertise in national security. Bennett’s talk, titled “What a Career in Government is Like,” captivated the interns with her storytelling approach. She painted a vivid picture of the intelligence officer’s role as a hunter, tracking threats, and piecing together fragments of information to protect the nation. Her anecdotes and insights provided an authentic and inspiring glimpse into the life of a government intelligence professional, leaving a lasting impression on the interns.
